UNESCO World Heritage Sites
As one of Vauban’s major masterpieces, and now magnificently restored, the Citadel of Besançon is considered to be one of the most beautiful in France. Its fortifications are included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. It is a cultural and tourist mecca and houses, among others, a zoological garden, the Museum of Resistance and Deportation and the Comtois Museum.
The Great Saltworks, a UNESCO world heritage site as an extension of the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans, is testament of 1200 years of salt mining in Franche Comté.
As a Royal factory in the XVIIIth century, the Royal Saltworks was conceived by the visionary architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. As a unique testimony in the industrial history, it is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
